(New Orleans – December 16, 2014) — The Cowen Institute has launched a new interactive tool to help families gather information on public schools and complete school applications.

“Parents access information about schools in a variety of ways,” said Patrick Sims, Senior Research Analyst at Cowen. “Our Governance and School Guide provides in-depth information in an interactive format online, making it easier to narrow down school choices and determine the distance to a school. Also, the Guide is complementary to other valuable parent resources, including The Parents’ Guide to Public Schools, LA School Finder, and the annual Urban League Schools Expo.”

Using the Cowen Institute Governance and School Guide, families can filter schools by performance, OneApp participation and geographic zones, grade levels, and by the mode of transportation offered. With the interactive map, families can determine how far a school is from their home and the length of commute by car, public transportation, bicycle, or on foot.

“With the 2015-2016 OneApp application process in full swing, families are looking for resources to inform their school preferences,” Kristen Morgan, Executive Director of Student Enrollment with the Recovery School District, stated. “The Cowen Institute’s new guide helps families access information such as school performance, transportation options, and distance between home and school. This interactive tool is another great source of information for families to use when considering their school options prior to completing their OneApp.”

About the Cowen Institute for Public Education Initiatives
The Cowen Institute’s mission is to advance the success of New Orleans children and young adults on their educational pathways. Launched in early 2007, the Cowen Institute chronicles and assesses the impact that education restructuring has had on New Orleans youth and families. We promote the practical application of our research findings to strengthen learning environments, develop programs, and advance effective public policies. In partnership with leaders and educators, we strive to enhance the success of K-12 public education and to boost career options for unemployed, out-of-school youth. Embedded in an anchor institution, the Cowen Institute leverages Tulane University to further this work.
