Umoja Student Development Corporation equips low-income young people to succeed by bringing together schools, families, and communities. After 15 years of experience in the most challenged Chicago schools, their hugely successful, practical Umoja University professional development for high school teachers comes here for the first time this summer on Friday, June 27th!

SESSION I: Student Engagement

Because students come to school with myriad complex challenges, academic content alone is not enough to prepare them for postsecondary success.  This workshop explores how positive student-adult relationships can be leveraged to coach students through postsecondary goal setting. Participants practice building interpersonal connections with students while fostering deeper supports for students to attain college and career success.

SESSION II: Positive Purposeful Student Relationships

How do you engage students in meaningful classroom conversations and ask deep questions? What can you do as a teacher to use students’ real-life experiences to engage them as they take ownership of their own inquiry and learning? Participants will practice targeted questions, follow-up, and probing strategies to promote effective classroom discussions, student-to-student dialogue, and to support one-on-one student-teacher coaching sessions.

Payment Orders should be sent to the same address. Checks must be received by Wednesday, June 25th. Details regarding location, syllabus, and schedule will be sent via email the week of June 23rd. You may also pay by check or cash the day-of (please check this page in case the sessions reach capacity ahead of time.)


Cancellations will only be accepted in writing by email to Carol Chen at, and refunds will be granted on the following schedule:

  • Cancellations received prior to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2014: full refund
  • Cancellations received after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 20, 2014: no refund granted

In the event that we must cancel a workshop, registrants will be notified by email as soon as possible and a full refund will be issued if the registrant does not choose to attend an alternate session.

Tulane University has secured a group rate with Le Pavillon Hotel, located at 833 Poydras Street, New Orleans, LA 70112.

The following group rates are applicable for workshop participants: Run of House Deluxe Rooms: $145.00, plus taxes and other fees.

Shuttle Service between the workshop site at Sci High and the hotel will be provided daily at no extra charge.
