New Orleans Public Schools from the Students’ Perspective: An Evaluation of Nine Schools
Kids Rethink New Orleans’ Schools
Spring 2007
Abstract:
This study sent 25 middle school children from New Orleans to visit nine different New Orleans schools (a mix of both elementary and high schools, charter and non-charter), administered by New Orleans Public Schools, the Recovery School District, and the Algiers Charter School Association. The students passed out surveys to children at each school that evaluated factors such as school safety, cleanliness, and extracurricular activities. The student-led study found that the three Recovery School District-administered schools fell far behind other schools. The students recommended that all schools spend more on facilities improvements and hiring quality teachers and counselors.
