Louisiana’s Turnaround Zone: Answering the Urgency of Now
Louisiana Department of Education
March 2011
Abstract:
Louisiana’s Recovery School District (RSD), with its largest concentration of schools in New Orleans, represents one of the country’s aggressive attempt to systematically transform chronically low-performing schools in an urban school setting. In just five years, the number of students attending failing schools in New Orleans has dropped from 68 percent in 2004-2005 to just below 18 percent in 2009-2010. These and other facts on the Recovery School District are published in this Louisiana Department of Education report. The assessment of the RSD includes an examination of the overall impact of the RSD in New Orleans, as well as performance indicators specific to the RSD.
