Abstract:
This essay, part of an Urban Institute series addressing the challenges facing New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, focuses on the consequences this disaster had for young children, especially those who were economically disadvantaged before the storm. The author investigates the impact that traumatic events such as a separation from parents and time spent in a shelter can have on children. In conclusion she provides a framework for a response to this disaster and others that may impact the young.
