The Unique System of Charter Schools in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina:  Distinctive Structure, Familiar Challenges

Abstract:

In this article, the authors argue that though the new public education system in New Orleans has barely had a chance to germinate and challenges abound, much has been achieved already by reform-minded educators and public authorities committed to putting something better in place for the city’s children. Student achievement has risen, facilities have been renewed, and brand new charter schools are opening each year with all of the public engagement that entails. Time will tell if the unique system of public charter schools that now characterizes the school system will continue to achieve positive results. In the next several years New Orleans will witness how that system responds to the structural complexities and regulatory issues that will continue to challenge it.
