Service Learning Internship Program
The Cowen Institute is committed to attracting the brightest minds at Tulane University to serve as change agents in the revolutionary movement to transform the city’s public schools. In partnership with the Center for Public Service (CPS), the Cowen Institute launched an education-focused service learning internship, providing Tulane students with the opportunity to participate in the transformation of public education taking place in the city. The education service learning internship merges civic engagement with academic inquiry by pairing undergraduate students with traditional public and charter schools or the nonprofit organizations supporting them. This unique learning experience enables students to be involved in reshaping and rebuilding New Orleans’ public education in tangible ways.
Past Internships:
KIPP McDonogh 15 Charter School
The KIPP to College Project will require collecting data on Mc15 students currently enrolled in high school, organizing and disseminating data within KIPP New Orleans on the high school landscape in New Orleans, comparing data of KIPP and non-KIPP students who are college-bound, and facilitate access to academic resources. The intern should be resourceful and persistent in gathering the most accurate and up-to-date data regarding students and schools, proactive in the connection of students with necessary resources to support their college aspirations, committed to the belief that all students deserve a quality education, and able to work well with students, families, and educators.
New Orleans College Prep
The intern would be an integral part of the new student recruitment process for the 2010-11 school year and increasing communication with and involvement from parents. This project would include the development of a recruitment plan to reach potential students and parents, as well as the design of recruiting and promotional materials. The school is also seeking tutors to support its Saturday School program.
Audubon Charter School
In order to achieve the school’s mission, adequate and timely communication with a number of external audiences is imperative. Audubon is requesting a student intern to assist with the re-design of the school’s website and listserv. Project qualifications: extensive knowledge of how the internet works and computer skills, ability to work with Dreamweaver and Contribute web design programs, knowledge of how to set-up and maintain a listserv, excellent communication skills.
