Participating Schools and Key Partners
During the last school year (2008-09), AdvanceNOLA had seven AP classes in three high schools: O. Perry Walker Senior High School, John McDonogh Senior High School, and L. E. Rabouin High School. Schools were selected through a competitive request for proposal process led by the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI). Criteria included strong leadership, a publicly-funded high school, an open admissions policy, and a willingness to change their culture. In 2009-10, AP classes were not funded through AdvanceNOLA at Rabouin because the school is being closed by the Recovery School District. AP classes began in New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School (Sci High) and in George W. Carver High School in the 2009-10 school year. Additional information on each of our partner schools is below.

We are proud to report we have over 200 students enrolled in AdvanceNOLA this year in several subjects that include: Biology, Calculus, Chemistry, English Literature, English Language, and Statistics.
National Math and Science Initiative
The National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) is a non-profit entity created to raise funds for the improvement of mathematics and science education in the United States. The organization, which was founded in March 2007, was launched with the support of the ExxonMobil Foundation and aims to scale-up two proven programs: training and incentive programs for AP and pre-AP courses and UTeach. NMSI’s staff has provided ongoing training and support for AP teachers, including making recommendations for workshops to attend and for AP mentor teachers.
College Board
The College Board is a non-profit organization that is nationally recognized for programs that prepare students for college success. Each year, the College Board serves seven million students and their parents in college admissions, guidance, assessment, financial aid, enrollment, and teaching and learning. Among its best-known programs are the SAT®, the PSAT/NMSQT®, and the Advanced Placement Program® (AP®). Teachers have been and will be provided the opportunity to attend trainings provided by College Board.
Recovery School District
The Recovery School District (RSD) directly operates Carver, John McDonogh, and Rabouin High Schools. They signed an authorizing agreement with the Algiers Charter School Association to oversee O. Perry Walker Senior High School. The partnership with the RSD includes sharing data, distributing year-end reports, and meeting regularly. Sci High is an open enrollment charter high school authorized by OPSB.
